The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Tuesday confirmed its international backing through achievements, including the confiscation of 2.6 million kilograms of illicit substances and the detention of 18,500 drug traffickers in 2024.
At the unveiling of a central exhibit office gifted by the United States, NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd) shared this information. The facility was handed over to Marwa by U.S. Consulate General, Ms. Jo Ellen Georg, with the support of other U.S. officials.
Praising the U.S. as a dependable partner in Nigeria’s intensified efforts to tackle drug-related crimes, Marwa emphasized how the collaboration has greatly strengthened NDLEA’s operational capacity.
He pointed out that the continuing success in drug supply and demand reduction by the agency will ensure sustained support from the U.S. government, along with other global partners.
Despite the agency’s progress, Marwa acknowledged the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and addiction, reaffirming their commitment to overcoming the challenges.
The NDLEA boss stated that significant progress has been made despite obstacles, with notable successes in combating the drug trade.
“In 2024, we seized over 2.6 million kilograms of illicit substances. We arrested over 18,500 drug traffickers. Additionally, more than 3,250 individuals were convicted, including 10 major drug lords, and over 220 hectares of cannabis farms were destroyed. Over 8,200 people received counseling and rehabilitation, while more than 3,000 awareness programs were held across the nation in various locations, ensuring a balance between our efforts to reduce both drug supply and demand.”
Marwa called for continued collaboration from the U.S. and other global partners, emphasizing that the challenges posed by illicit drugs are complex and evolving, requiring constant innovation and partnerships. He also thanked the U.S. for its ongoing support and generosity.
